Crimson Tide Soundly Defeats Florida Gators For Run At National Title

The #1 Ranked Florida Gators went into the Georgia Dome for the SEC Championship with the complete knowledge that they had been the number one team in college football for the complete season, mainly resting on the shoulders of 2007 Heisman Trophy winner Tim Tebow and his ability to bring the team back from almost every situation that they had found themselves in for the past three years.

But the #2 Alabama Crimson Tide, under the direction of Head Coach Nick Saban, had other ideas. All year, they played in the shadow of the #1 Gators while they dominated opponents and quietly stayed at the #2 spot and strengthened their offensive line. They knew as they continued at their #2 spot that they had everything to make them #1, but having the BCS National Championship Trophy, the Gators would need a loss to dislodge the #1 ranking. Schedules that kept the two from meeting during the regular season made this SEC Championship game even more important, because when the #1 and #2 team play each other before the National Championship, it knocks one of the two teams out of the contention for good!

Of course, I was as certain of the Gator victory as the Gators were, until I realized that Nick Saban was the Alabama head coach. Suddenly, my stomach knotted up, before the first kick, because I remembered how Nick had taken the LSU Tigers into a dominant team after they had struggled with the Gators before, so I knew that Nick would not allow a Gator team to defeat him two years in a row.

The game began with exactly what I expected from a Nick Saban team. They dominated the offense, their defense made the normally calm Gators play like they were playing together for the first time. They got into Tebow's head early.

Throughout the game, I saw the Gators missing tackles, dropping balls and slipping on the turf while the Crimson Tide made sure tackles, caught tough clutch passes and ran with the conviction of one who is secure in their element. The team that Nick Saban built played like the #1 team in the country, while the Gators looked like one of their previous unranked opponents. They did make some good plays, but they just did not have the confidence that the team on the other side of the ball had.

As the 2009 season closes out, with the Gators heading out with no chance at the National Title, the senior class needs to remember that they won the National Title last year, and that they did perform all season long and that while the heart wrenching defeat that they lived through was a tough break in their stellar careers, they still have the rest of their lives to play football or at least enjoy their status as a team that did make things happen.
